Maybe it’s because he’s my youngest or I’m “busy”, but while Neal was already very skilled in the art of dressing himself (teach independence, right?), I still help Riley get dressed. Lately Riley’s been in a real “I do it myself” stage. It’s a good reminder for me to slow down and let him do it. So I did. This was the result. Did I make him change it? No. He was so proud of himself and spent the
entire day with his pants on backwards.

This photo was taken while my grandfather was Mission President in Hawaii (1963 – 1966). President Gordon B. Hinckley was visiting in his role as an Apostle. I fondly remember the story of my Aunt Sharon, then 7, getting sent to her room for running around the dinner table and making faces at President Hinckley (sorry Sharon!). Grandma and Grandpa were so worried about their children being “well behaved” for their visiting dignitary. Having seen the sense of humor President Hinckley has displayed numerous times, I’m sure he thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
Another favorite story comes from when he was on his mission in Great Britain. He was feeling discouraged and wrote to his father that he was wasting his time and his father’s money. His father’s response was simple: “Forget yourself and go to work, With Love, Your Father”. This has brought me comfort. If a Prophet of the Lord could feel that way, then it was okay when I do. As long as I “forgot myself and went to work” at whatever it is I need to “work” at.
He will be missed. I am grateful he is now with his beloved wife, Marjorie, and for the many years of service he has given my church.

“We’re all alike unto our Father in Heaven. There is no discrimination in his sight,” President Hinckley

Bryan and I have both commented this week that the kids don’t listen. In fact, it’s like we’ve never said anything at all. Now, with Neal’s hearing loss, we have to double check that he really has heard us before we get upset. However, there are plenty of times that we are just flat out ignored because the boys don’t like what we’ve said. If you’re feeling that way at all, you’ll like this:
{An acquaintance sent me this story. It made me cry … rude!}
I’m invisible …
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I’m on the phone and ask to be taken to the store. Inside I’m thinking, “Can’t you see I’m on the phone?” Obviously not. No one can see if I’m on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor, or even standing on my head in the corner, because no one can see me at all. I’m invisible. Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more: Can you fix this? Can you tie this? Can you open this? Some days I’m not a pair of hands; I’m not even a human being. I’m a clock to ask, “What time is it?” I’m a satellite guide to answer, “What number is the Disney Channel?” I’m a car to order, “Pick me up right around 5:30, please.” I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude — but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again. She’s going … she’s going … she’s gone!

It’s good to be back in the groove! Last night’s class was AWESOME! It was a little smaller than usual, but that just meant more contact with everyone in class. Everyone in class had such positive energy and made for a great time! Everyone was happy with the new pages, we had a birthday girl and cupcakes, completed fun pages, learned new techniques and had a
great time! Thanks ladies for making my job the best there is! -

Thank you GTU for sharing your video! I love going on this program. The hosts are fantastic as well as the producers and the rest of the crew are also top notch! Thanks guys for letting me come on again!
Nicea says she’s not "crafty", but she did a great job! This is a fun program to watch (even when I’m not on). If you are local be sure to tune in, if you are not … they offer video of all their projects for your enjoyment!
I’ll keep the video on for a couple of days only because it just starts playing even if you don’t want it to. You can always link to it from the GTU link above.

I really like how these both turned out. In fact, I wanted to save them for my CK Hall of Fame entry (I’ve been talked into it). I hope you like them as much! This should give you a great start on your calendars for 2009.
Computer Tips: If you would like to use the same techniques I used in my photo on the February page, follow these instructions provided in the January CK:
- Open your photo and duplicate it onto a second layer.
- Change the bottom layer to black and white or desaturate it.
- Add a digital frame above the color photo layer.
- Cut away the portion of the photo that is outside the frame to reveal the black and white photo.

My friend, Carey, has been making calendars for years. I began in 2005 when I taught the “12 Months of Memories” Calendar class at All My Memories in Draper, UT. They are really fun and people look forward to receiving them, however they are really time consuming.
Last year Carey and I got smart. We started designing our 2008 calendars in February. We split up the months we would design so we each designed 1/2 the calendar. We had a few other friends that wanted to do it also and owe us big time! When the paper was in the store, we bought our supplies and gathered it all together. We then worked on them when we had the time. Some us (Carey) diligently had them done within a week and others (like me) diligently gathered my “kits”. I then worked on a few months at a time a couple of times last year. Although it didn’t save me from putting my pictures on the calendars the night before I gave the gift, it doesn’t take that long to apply photos.
Tomorrow (January 16) on Good Things Utah I will get the ball rolling for all of us with ideas for January and February.
