This photo was taken while my grandfather was Mission President in Hawaii (1963 – 1966). President Gordon B. Hinckley was visiting in his role as an Apostle. I fondly remember the story of my Aunt Sharon, then 7, getting sent to her room for running around the dinner table and making faces at President Hinckley (sorry Sharon!). Grandma and Grandpa were so worried about their children being “well behaved” for their visiting dignitary. Having seen the sense of humor President Hinckley has displayed numerous times, I’m sure he thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing.
Another favorite story comes from when he was on his mission in Great Britain. He was feeling discouraged and wrote to his father that he was wasting his time and his father’s money. His father’s response was simple: “Forget yourself and go to work, With Love, Your Father”. This has brought me comfort. If a Prophet of the Lord could feel that way, then it was okay when I do. As long as I “forgot myself and went to work” at whatever it is I need to “work” at.
He will be missed. I am grateful he is now with his beloved wife, Marjorie, and for the many years of service he has given my church.![]()
“We’re all alike unto our Father in Heaven. There is no discrimination in his sight,” President Hinckley
